KDOC Nursing Education Program Breakthrough Team
Team Purpose
  • Expand the number of students (by approximately 24 to 30 annually) who have the opportunity to receive a nursing credential (LPN and/or RN) by providing high quality clinical sites at the El Dorado, Ellsworth, Norton, and Hutchinson Correctional facilities as well as Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility,

  • Provide an additional career path for nursing students with a well-paying, stable job opportunity in rural, underserved areas,

  • Create a pipeline of qualified nursing candidates for positions in correctional medical facilities,

  • Provide Hutchinson and Pratt County Colleges with a cost-effective option to expand their nursing programs, and

  • Enhance the clinical competency of new nursing staff working within the correctional and related public health systems.
Current Status
The Breakthrough Team’s proposal was approved by the Kansas Board of Nursing in March 2010. This pilot program launched with Pratt Community College nursing students during the Fall 2010 semester. Hutchinson Community College will launch their pilot program during the Spring 2011 semester. Evaluation of the program is on-going and will be reported to the Kansas Board of Nursing.
Next Milestones
Evaluation data will be gathered after the pilot programs at Pratt and Hutchison Community Colleges have at least two semesters of data. The team will make further recommendations to the Kansas Board of Nursing based upon the evaluation results.
