In partnership with the Kansas Sheriffs Association, the HealthCare Costs for Inmates Breakthrough Team was successful in gaining passage of HB 2893, effective July 1, 2006, that brought discounted savings on hospital bills and physician services for inmates in county detention facilities. The law required that local governments compute the Medicaid rate and pay the bill appropriately. As such, the team along with the Kansas Department of Corrections, created a low-cost option for this to be accomplished centrally. Most local governments continue to selection this implementation option.
Updated savings results from HB 2893 can be found in the Claims Summary Report: County Jail Savings on Inmate Health Care Costs in the Resource Center. Savings are averaging over 72%. |
